Burrowing Bees

by John Sterrett

This morning I went out to drink coffee on my front porch, and noticed a lot of bees swarming in the front yard close to the ground, and after further looking I noticed they were burrowing in the ground almost like they were making nests in the ground.

I have never seen this; is this common?

Hi John,

The only thing I can tell you for certain is that they are not honey bees. There are a number of bee and wasp species that burrow into the ground to create their nests, but honey bees don't.

From your description and photos, it sounds like you might have Digger bees in your yard. You can read a bit more about that here.
