Spring poisoning

by Bill
(Hensall Ont Canada)

We are in Huron county in Ontario Canada and have just had a suspected bee kill in the area. Treated corn seed was used and planted with a air seeder and the bees were about 600 feet from the field. It was planted Friday night and Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon the bees were rolling out of the hive and dieing. On the Monday they were throwing out brood.

The scarey part is that by Monday night a lot of the dead bees and brood had disappeared. If the beekeeper did not have the bees in the back yard and was home to see it it would have gone unnoticed and would be wondering what was happening to the spring build up.

clothianidin bee deaths
by: Bill

The bees continued to die in larger numbers till the middle of June. The hives did poorly all summer. In a meeting with the Pest Management Regulatory Association (PMRA) we were told that a very large number of the samples had clothianidin in them. Some are expecting a larger than usal die of this spring in Ontario. The die off looks like it has been happening the last few years but has become a majour problem this season.

bees dying all season
by: Bill

Bees are still dying in August 30. Hives are not building and it would look like a less than 50% crop. Bees will not go up and are not as strong. Wintering will likely be a disaster.
