A Bit About Texas Bees and Texas Beekeeping…Texas is a big state, and it covers an extreme diversity of climates, from semi-arid regions in the west and south to heavily forested regions in the east. Winters vary from near frost-free zones in the south, to sub-zero lows in the north. As a result, beekeeping can be a considerably different experience in one part of the state than in another. According to recent USDA statistics, Texas ranks 7th in honey production among the 50 U.S. states. Texas colonies produced an average of 72 pounds of surplus honey per colony. Some of the Texas plants that are major or minor honey producers include mesquite, cotton, horsemint, broomweed, goldenrod, and sweet clover. Africanized honey bees have been present in most of Texas for a number of years, having entered the U.S. through the Texas – Mexico border. Africanized bees that have taken up residence in a structure makes bee removal more challenging, and more necessary.
